The election of Donald Trump represents a sound rejection of the values that America was thought to pre-eminently represent. Instead of international engagement, America has chosen isolationism. Instead of toleration and acceptance of diverse populations, America has chosen to encourage suspicion, suppression, and fear. Instead of strengthening its commitment to equality, America has chosen to treat some people as if they were of lesser moral worth. This talk is about how this could happen, what it suggests about the future, and how we should understand the fundamental struggle out of which the Trump phenomenon arose.
