After the nuclear phase-out at the end of 2022, around 27,000 cubic meters of highly radioactive waste will remain in Germany - and no one knows where to put it yet. A final repository for this waste is to be found by 2031. In a large-scale selection process, the German government is therefore looking for the best possible site for the safe storage of highly radioactive waste over a period of one million years. At the end of September, a first interim report by the Federal Society for Final Disposal (BGE) will now name possible sites for further exploration.
But what actually constitutes a safe repository? Where could the waste potentially be stored? And how can citizens* be involved in the process of finding a final repository?
