Ph.D. Title: Enabling conditions for renewable energy development in subsaharan Africa - a comparative analysis

The dissertation investigates the political dimensions of sustainable energy development in Sub Saharan Africa, with a special focus on identifying the different roles needed in a effective value chain and if they are adequately filled by stakeholders.

An analytical approach is developed that incorporates theories of political power into multi-level governance. The case study approach is used to compare sites of energy provision in Mozambique with comparable sites in two East African countries that are ahead in the off-grid electrification, namely: Tanzania and Kenya – the empirical evidence from the field.

Besides the identification of the successful applications of off grid RET’s in Mozambique Kenya and Tanzania, this research will identify the gaps in the existing literature, making this a clear original contribution in this field of research.
