This study examines the extent to which Urban Digital Twins (UDTs) can contribute to accelerating the sustainable transformation of German cities, as well as the current development status of these projects. For this purpose, 34 use cases of so-called "Urban Digital Twins" (UDTs) in Germany were examined.
The analysis focuses on the municipal areas in which UDTs are being used or developed. The aim is to explore the potential this topic offers for sustainable urban development and to identify the challenges that arise in the context of implementation and governance. The results so far suggest that UDTs can significantly contribute to optimizing urban systems (including mobility, housing, and energy) and achieving the SDGs. At the same time, however, significant challenges remain, such as the lack of standardization, inadequate data quality, ethical risks, and social exclusion.
