Résumé
Markus Siewert joined the Professorship for Policy Analysis at the Munich School for Politics and Public Policy as a senior researcher and lecturer in April 2019. Before moving to the TU Munich, he was a researcher and lecturer at the Goethe University Frankfurt, the John-F.-Kennedy Institute at FU Berlin, and the University of Freiburg.
After his study at the University of Freiburg with majors in Political Science and Contemporary History, Markus Siewert received his PhD from the Goethe University Frankfurt in 2017 with a dissertation (“summa cum laude”) on the engagement and success of US presidents in the legislative arena. He was a visiting (doctoral) fellow at various prestigious research universities in the United States (Georgetown, American University and University of California Irvine) and Europe (European University Institute Florence, Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, Università degli Studi di Siena, University of Birmingham).
Research
His research focuses on the intersection of comparative politics, democracy studies and public policy analysis. He is interested in the empirical-comparative examination of existing challenges and socio-political action in relation to topics of digital transformation, artificial intelligence and sustainability, as well as the socio-political governance of these topics. His focus is on i) the study of problem definition and perception and the resulting policy formulation; and ii) the analysis and explanation of social negotiation processes and government actions in Germany and in an international comparison. He also deals with fundamental aspects of the quality of established democracies.
In addition, he conducts research on qualitative-empirical methods in the social sciences, in particular on Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA), process tracing and case studies as well as the integration in multi-method designs.
