Résumé
Markus Siewert worked as a senior researcher and lecturer at the Professorship for Policy Analysis at the Munich School of Politics and Public Policy from 2019 to 2022. Before joining TU Munich, he held research and teaching positions at Goethe University Frankfurt, the John-F.-Kennedy Institute at Freie Universität Berlin, and the University of Freiburg.
After completing his studies in Political Science and Contemporary History at the University of Freiburg, Markus Siewert earned his PhD from Goethe University Frankfurt in 2017 with a dissertation (“summa cum laude”) on the engagement and success of U.S. presidents in the legislative process. During and after his doctoral studies, he was a visiting fellow at several prestigious research institutions in the United States (Georgetown University, American University, and University of California, Irvine) and Europe (European University Institute in Florence, Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, Università degli Studi di Siena, and the University of Birmingham).
Research
His research centered on the intersection of comparative politics, democracy studies, and public policy analysis. He was particularly interested in the empirical and comparative investigation of contemporary challenges and socio-political responses related to digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and sustainability, as well as the governance of these domains. His work focused on:
- the study of problem definition and perception, and the resulting policy formulation
- the analysis and explanation of societal negotiation processes and government action in Germany and in international comparison
He also explored foundational aspects of democratic quality in established systems.
In addition, he conducted research on qualitative-empirical methods in the social sciences, with a particular emphasis on Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA), process tracing, and case study approaches, as well as their integration into multi-method designs.
