Ahmed Maati has been a postdoctoral researcher at the chair of Policy Analysis – Hochschul für Politik TUM since July 2022. Between 2017 and April 2022, he occupied the position of a junior lecturer and research associate at the institute of political science at Eberhard-Karls University of Tuebingen. In January 2022, Maati concluded his Ph.D. research on the interaction between stateness, collective identity, exclusion, and their impact on regime type (summa cum Laude). Maati concluded his Bachelor's degree at the American University in Cairo and has been the first graduate of the joint Master’s program Comparative and Middle East Politics and Societies (CMEPS) in 2015. Since 2018, Maati investigates several issues pertaining to digital technologies, authoritarianism, and democratic decay.

Research Foci

Ahmed Maati’s research foci lie in the broad field of comparative politics with a special focus on authoritarianism, democratic erosion, stateness, and digitization. He has comparatively investigated various issues of digital authoritarianism and democratic erosion, digital surveillance during Covid-19 as well as the interaction between religion and state. Maati’s research relies on a multitude of quantitative and qualitative methods that are strictly guided by the type and purpose of the research inquiry.
