Empirical studies show that those who experience violence in childhood are more likely to perpetrate it themselves later in life. In an interview with ZDF heute, Prof. Steinert emphasizes: “To prevent violence, you have to start early. Otherwise, it continues across generations again and again.” To better protect women, support services must be expanded and more spaces in women’s shelters must be created. In addition, women must be financially empowered. Prof. Steinert stresses: “Many women do not leave violent relationships – out of economic concern or dependence."
