Ph.D. title: Transparency with Chinese Characteristics

Transparency is the cornerstone of good democratic governance. While China is often criticized for its lack of transparency, its uptake of transparency in its governance since the 2000s is not well known and understood. Addressing this knowledge gap, the thesis project looks into the development of China's transparency turn, and explores its conditions and limitations, focusing especially on environmental governance and public health governance. The research employs a mix of qualitative methods, including interviews and archival research.

Sau Kan holds a M.A in Nationalism Studies from Central European University, and a BSocSc specializing in international politics from the University of Hong Kong. Her M.A thesis looks at economic nationalism in China and explores the discourses supporting automotive industrial policies in China.
