Dr. Potz-Nielsen will soon join us at HfP as a postdoctoral fellow, so this is also a nice opportunity to get to know her – including for PhD students who might be interested in taking the applied methods course ("Global Policy Evaluation: Methods and Applications") that she will be offering as a block seminar in late Sept/early Oct.
ABSTRACT: States facing sanctions can circumvent their negative effects by "repatriation requirements," which force firms and citizens to return to their home countries any profits made abroad. This influx of money can bolster the sanctioned country's economy, including by creating demand for the domestic currency. Potz-Nielsen presents new data on the use of repatriation requirements and their ability to support domestic currencies in the face of international sanctions. Countries’ ability to use domestic policy to counteract the sanctioning of international actors provides insight to how financial policy can be used to guard countries against the pressure of global markets.
