This study examines the extent to which Urban Digital Twins (UDTs) can contribute to accelerating the sustainable transformation of German cities and the current development status of these projects. For this purpose, 34 use cases of so-called "Urban Digital Twins" (UDTs) in Germany were examined.
The analysis focuses on the question of which municipal areas UDTs are currently being used or developed. The aim is to explore the potential this topic offers for sustainable urban development and to identify the challenges that arise in the context of implementation and governance. The results so far suggest that UDTs can make a significant contribution to optimizing urban systems (mobility, housing, energy) and achieving SDGs. At the same time, however, significant challenges remain, such as the lack of standardization, inadequate data quality, ethical risks, and social exclusion.
