New DFG Research Project: "Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Child Marriage, Sexual and Reproductive Health, and Domestic Violence in India and Zambia"

The German Research Foundation (DFG) is supporting the new research project "Influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on child marriage, sexual and reproductive health and domestic violence in India and Zambia" at the Professorship of Global Health of Prof. Dr. Janina Steinert.

The COVID-19 pandemic may severely slow down progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 on promoting gender equality. This research project will look at the immediate impacts of the pandemic on three SDG targets, including domestic violence (SDG target 5.2), sexual and reproductive health (SDG target 5.3) and child marriage (SDG target 5.6). Primary qualitative and quantitative data will be collected in India and Zambia, which, according to the "Gender Inequality Index", are among the countries worldwide in which girls and women are most disadvantaged. Using a mixed-methods approach, the project will also investigate how cultural, political, and societal differences between the African and Asian contexts may alter the impact of the pandemic on the three SDG targets.
