Soccer match days appear to shift the dynamics of domestic violence, according to new research from the London School of Economics. In a recent Instagram and TikTok post, ARD's Team Recherche discussed the findings of this study in an interview with Prof. Janina Steinert.

The study found that incidents of domestic violence between partners tend to peak around eight to ten hours after a match ends. This effect appears to intensify when games kick off earlier in the day and when the perpetrator has been drinking.

But what about Germany? According to Prof. Janina Steinert, no robust German studies have yet examined the link between soccer or other sporting events and domestic violence. Still, she notes that the mechanisms identified in other countries — such as increased alcohol consumption during matches and heightened emotional intensity — could plausibly drive similar patterns of violence in Germany as well.
