Ph.D. Title: Politics of Adaptation to Climate Change in Sudan

Sudan is classified by the United Nations as one of the Least Developed Countries in the world. Yet, Sudan has developed and followed sound policies to adapt to the adversaries associated to the global climate change. Sudan is a signatory of all major international treaties dealing with global climate change. It also has established specialized national council called The Higher Council for Environment and National Resources to coordinate adaption policies and efforts of the country among various relevant ministries in 1996. Moreover, the country is the home for many internationally-recognized experts in climate change issues, including some of UNFCCC’s reports authors. It also was repeatedly chosen to represent the African countries in climate change issue in the international arena. Finally, Sudan was one of the early countries to submit its Intended Nationally Determined Contributions at the onset of Paris accord of 2015. So, this project intends to solve the puzzle of how Sudan, the Least Developed Country, is able to establish and follow robust environmental policies.

 

For that purpose, relevant existing literature will be reviewed, analyzed, and utilized. Field work, in Sudan, will include questionnaires and in-person interviews with stakeholders. A combination of quantitative and qualitative methods will be utilized to draw conclusions. The findings of the study will be shared with stakeholders, especially the field researchers and decision-makers in Sudan.
