Last June, the chair of Environmental and Climate Policy at the Technical University of Munich, Hochschule für Politik München, participated in the 16th Nordic Environmental Social Science (NESS2024) Conference held in the city of Turku, Finland. This year’s conference focused on sustainability transformations and the crucial role of interdisciplinary dialogue in knowledge co-production.
Ana Maria Isidoro Losada and Barbara Dias Carneiro presented their latest research in collaboration with the ICOS Cities PAUL project. The study looked at the multi-level governance structures and the use of data in urban climate governance through the experiences of three major European cities: Paris, Munich, and Zurich. By using interviews, document analysis, and event visits, they highlighted the complexity of interactions between cities and actors, including collaborations and engagements with science, businesses, the city administration and civil society.
The conference held multiple workshops with the space for discussing the submitted papers. Hosted by Elisa Kochskämper and Kristine Kern, the workshop “Governing urban climate transformations: Towards climate neutrality and resilience” provided the ideal place for our two researchers to present their paper and explore topics such as drivers of local climate action to the role of cities in climate governance.
