Prof. Dr. Sun-Jin Yun, Professor of Environmental and Energy Policies, Political Economy of Environmental Energy hold a lecture titled ""The Current Status and Challenges of energy transition in South Korea".

South Korea is the 10th biggest economy with 9th CO2 emissions and 11th GHG emissions in the world.

Its main source of GHG emissions is the transformation sector, accounting for 37%.

Its electrisity generation system is highly centralized with 40% of coal and 27% of nuclear power.  S. Korea's nuclear installation capacity ranks top 6th in the world and its nuclear density (installation capacity divided by land area) is the highest in the world. By contrast, the share of renewable energy for electricity generation is around 7%, the lowest share among OECD countries.

This lecture explores the history and current status of energy transition and challenges faced by S. Korea.

Even though S. Korea declared 2050 Carbon Neutraluty and enhanced 2030 NDC, it faces lots of barriers.

Recent change of the government adds more uncertainty to its future.
