Craig Murphy will summarize the findings from 10 years of research with JoAnne Yates (MIT), tracing voluntary consensus standard-setting as a form of technology governance from the 1880s through today based on archival material, including newly uncovered documents, from three continents, interviews, and participant observation. Murphy and Yates examine the evolution of technology governance through technical standards developed in voluntary collaborative setting from the early years, when it was focused on mechanical engineering (where Johann Bauschinger, co-founder of Mechanical Engineering at the TUM played a key role) through recent years, when a new generation of standardizers has focused on supporting the Internet and Web, as well as regulating the potential social and environmental harms of the increasingly global economy.

Eine zentrale Figur in dem Buch ist Johann Bauschinger, der Ende des 19.Jahrhunderts als Professor für Mathematik und Physik einer der Mitbegründer des TUM Maschinenwesens war.
