Events in cooperation
"Explaining the unexplainable" under this keyword, Dr. Jackson Janes, President of the American Institute of Contemporary German Studies, discussed the consequences for the transatlantic relations after the presidential elections in the United States as part of a co-operation event with the Bavarian Center for Transatlantic Relations (Amerikahaus Munich). In order to understand the American election campaign, one has to look at the social and ethnic structures in the US and understand what the Americans see as a threat or an opportunity. The established institutions, according to Janes, who have long been an identity-builder for the American population, are currently in an acute crisis. The confidence of the population in the government, trade unions, religious groups, businesses and the media has been shaken by a series of scandals. But one must accept the facts. The new head of the US will therefore face a major challenge.
